I am going to say the thing it took me thirteen years — and one book I had to read several times before it actually landed — to learn.
Most of what we got taught about emotions is wrong.
Not "needs nuance" wrong. Wrong wrong. The whole foundation — that emotions are hardwired, universal, sitting inside us like little volcanoes waiting to erupt — is based on a Darwin study from 1872 and a handful of follow-ups in the 1970s that have not held up under modern testing. The science you have been measuring yourself against is older than indoor plumbing in most of the country.
The actual current science, which has been sitting in research labs for the last twenty-five years and only recently started leaking into the world, says something completely different. It says your body is not having emotions at you. It is constructing them — moment to moment, out of ingredients, in a process that you can actually learn to see.
And once you can see it — really see it — the Tuesday you keep replaying stops being evidence that you are broken and starts being information.
The framework was wrong. Not you.
This is not therapy. This is education. This is the operating manual.
